Recently, I have become interested in the impact of engaging in art on learning and wellbeing. This interest has sent me into a rabbit hole of fascinating research and has sparked new ideas for my own teaching practice. In today’s digest, I’m sharing resources around this topic.

  1. Arts participation by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF)

This short article summarizes the impact of arts-based approaches in primary and secondary education on the performance in different subjects and personal attitudes.

  2. Getting creative in schools to improve young people’s wellbeing by Prof Neil Humphrey for BERA

A blog post reviews research on the effects of art engagement on younger student populations and demonstrates the multifaceted benefits creative outlets can have.

  3. Engaging in the arts for health by Prof Daisy Fancourt for Expeditions

It is impossible to talk about this topic without featuring Prof Daisy Fancourt who is a Professor for Psychobiology and Epidemiology at University College London. She has spent years investigating the effects of the arts on health and wellbeing on a large scale. She recently published a book (Art Cure) which is shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction. In the article above she gives an overview of some essential findings.

  4. Popular Podagogy: How to integrate art and bring artists into your classroom  with Dr Tiina Kukkonen for the Popular Podagogy podcast

This final resource is a podcast episode interview with Dr Tiina Kukkonen who explains how art-integrated teaching practice could look like.

  5. Embedding the Arts in Schools: Why It Matters by My-Progression

A video explaining different ways of how art elements can be implemented in subjects and how learners can be motivated to participate.
